The Google Search bug was discovered by a London-based researcher

An innocuous-looking Google bug has been revealed that has the potential for spreading misinformation. The bug was documented by a London-based researcher, who discovered that Google's Knowledge Panel can be tricked to show up with unrelated queries, thus allowing a malicious actor to use them for disseminating false information or propaganda. With the world already reeling with the impact of the Russian manipulation of the US presidential election using Facebook, any potential to trick Google searches has wide-ranging implications.

According to a blog post by Wietze Beukema, who works for the Cyber Threat Detection & Response team at PwC, anyone can just add one parameter to a Google Search URL and a specific Knowledge Panel will appear next to the search results, even though it is not being intentionally shown by Google.

Google had introduced the Knowledge Graph with much fanfare in 2012 to help its users get a complete picture of what they were looking for without needing to click on the search results. The Knowledge Panel, which was powered by the Knowledge Graph, would appear on the right or top of the search results, depending on which device you were using and offer information about what you were searching for. It is limited to certain, yet expansive, set of queries.

The company also included a share button in the Knowledge Panel to make it easier for the people to share them with others. Now, this sharing functionality has come back to haunt the company.

Essentially, when you click on the share button in the Knowledge Panel, Google generates a URL, which includes the necessary parameters – kgmid and kponly - to make sure the panel will be displayed when anyone click on the URL. Now, if you pick one of these parameters from an existing Knowledge Panel sharing link and paste them in another query's search URL, you will get the Knowledge Panel from the previous query in the new search results, even though both have no relation. The kgmid parameter can adds a Knowledge Panel to right or top of the search results, whereas the kponly parameter completely removes the search results from the first page and just displays the Knowledge Panel.

The existence of this bug effectively allows anyone with a Knowledge Panel ID to spoof the search results and share them on the social media or other platforms to spread misinformation. Here is an example of what can be achieved with the bug – Who is responsible for 9/11 .

A Google spokesperson told TechCrunch that the company was working on a fix. At the time of publication, it seems Google has removed the share button from Knowledge Panels, but if you have the necessary ID, you can still spoof the search results. It is unclear how Google plans to completely fix the issue.

WhatsApp is reportedly set to receive fingerprint authentication on Android and iOS

WhatsApp is reportedly working on a fingerprint authentication feature to protect its users' chats from being seen by others. The authentication, once enabled, will be required for users to open the app. The Facebook-owned instant messaging service was recently reported to bring a similar feature to iPhone as well, supporting two biometric authentication methods - both Face ID and Touch ID. It appears this won't be limited to iPhone, and users on Android will get fingerprint authentication, but no facial recognition based authentication, thanks to the lack of a widely used standard on the platform.

According to WABetaInfo, a fan site that tests new WhatsApp features early, the feature is current under development, and disabled by default in the Android 2.19.3 beta version.

"After working to implement Face ID and Touch ID features on iOS (that aren't available yet for development reasons), WhatsApp has finally started to work on the Authentication feature on Android, using your Fingerprint!" said the

report on Tuesday.

How to enable fingerprint authentication on WhatsApp

The fingerprint authentication feature will be available within the app under Settings > Account > Privacy.

Once you enable the fingerprint feature, WhatsApp will be completely protected from others to be seen. Of course, if your phone is already protected by an authentication method, it's a little redundant.

"The user will need to authenticate his identity in order to open WhatsApp (from the app icon, from the notification or from external pickers). It will protect the entire app, so it's not used to lock specific conversations," the report added.

This feature would be available in future for any Android user (and later for iOS users too) having Android Marshmallow and newer operating systems and a fingerprint sensor, the report adds.

Samsung is expected to announce its first 5G and foldable phones at an event on February 20

Samsung announced it will hold an event on February 20, where it's expected to unveil its next flagship phone, the Galaxy S10.

The phone is expected to include 5G capability. Another version of the phone is said to have a foldable screen.

Samsung reportedly moved up its launch date to preempt Huawei's launch of foldable devices.

On Thursday, 10th Jan Samsung said it will hold an event on Feb. 20 in San Francisco where it's expected to unveil its next flagship phone, the Galaxy S10.
The phone is expected to be the first major smartphone that supports 5G wireless networks, the faster wireless standard that carriers are deploying this year. Another version of the phone is said to have a foldable screen.
Samsung announced in July it had developed foldable screen technology, but since then, the company has been beat to the punch in launching the technology in a product. Startup Royale launched its FlexiPai mobile phone at a conference in Beijing in November. Samsung lowered its Q4 guidance earlier this week, citing competition in the smartphone market as a reason for missing expectations.
For its tenth anniversary phones, Samsung plans to roll out three versions of the Galaxy S10 with different display sizes starting in March, then roll out a fourth later in the spring that would include 5G network capability, the Wall Street Journal reported . Samsung has reportedly told partners the foldable screen phone may be released as early as April, though a date and name have yet to be set. The company is considering names including "Fold," "Galaxy Fold" and "Galaxy F," the WSJ reported.
The foldable phone has already been delayed, after Samsung initially said customers should expect a launch in 2018. Samsung showed a prototype of the foldable phone in November. The phone folds open to act more like a tablet.
Samsung moved up its launch date for its S10 series in order to preempt Huawei's expected unveiling of a foldable-screen competitor at a Barcelona trade show in late February, the WSJ reported.

The line-up has cards that have Class 10 high-speed performance.

Lexar is pricing the 1TB card at MSRP $499.99. The card is already available in the US.

At CES 2019 the company announced a partnership with case manufacturer Spigen to bring the technology to your phone case.
Ossia has found a way to shrink down the transmitter and deliver more power, think of it like a Wi-Fi router, but for power. Spigen CEO Daeyoung Kim told Digital Trends that the company plans to design a new case range, initially for iPhones, but other models will follow and they will also design and sell a power transmitter with Ossia’s tech inside.

 Hundreds of U.S. utilities were penetrated by Russian hackers who could have disrupted the nation's power grid.
The attacks were launched last year by threat actors belonging to a group known as "Dragonfly" or "Energetic Bear," which is sponsored by the Russian government, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.
The hackers used Black Hat tools such as phishing and waterhole traps to obtain credentials from legitimate users and leverage them to gain access to the utilities, the Journal noted, citing federal government officials.
"We've seen phishing and spearphishing used against energy and utility companies by foreign actors for more than decade," said Rohyt Belani, CEO of Cofense, a maker of antiphishing solutions, based in Leesburg, Virginia.
Phishing emails are used to trick targets into exposing their credentials or other sensitive information. Spearphishing does the same thing but is aimed at a narrower target audience.
"So this is a lot more of the same, although it seems to be happening at greater frequency," Belani told TechNewsWorld.
"The underlying technique is still spearphishing," he continued, "although the attackers are constantly modifying those techniques to get by the latest and greatest defense mechanisms."
To Freak Out or Not
While these utility intruders could disrupt electrical power in the United States, Belani doesn't think they will.
"I don't think nations like Russia or China would go down that path given the potential ramifications," he said, "but hacking like this gives those countries some levers to pull should tensions build."
The cyberattacks on U.S. utilities should be a source of concern, but they aren't "something to necessarily freak out about," remarked Emily S. Miller, director of national security and critical infrastructure programs at Mocana , a San Francisco-based company that focuses on embedded system security for industrial control systems and the Internet of Things.
"The electric grid is highly resilient," she told TechNewsWorld.
Resilient or not, the threat from these hackers to the grid appears to be very serious, maintained Barak Perelman, CEO of Indegy, a New York-based maker of security solutions for industrial systems.
"Russia has its finger on a big red button," he told TechNewsWorld. "If someone decides it's time to press that button, they can shut off significant portions of the U.S. power grid."
Not Intended to Disrupt Power
The intrusions DHS reported were not intended to disrupt power sources, noted Joe Slowik, an adversary hunter for Dragos, a maker of security software for the critical infrastructure community, based in Hanover, Maryland.
"Throughout, the adversaries in question limited operations to information gathering, network survey and reconnaissance," he told TechNewsWorld.
"There is no evidence that the adversaries were in position or intended to cause a widespread disruption event," Slowik said. "Furthermore, based on the tradecraft exhibited and methods observed, any such action would need to be 'manual' in nature, meaning even if this access was translated into an attack, it would scale poorly and result in limited utility impacts."
All large nation-state adversaries have been hacking each other's power grids as a matter of routine to preposition assets, said Ross Rustici, senior director of intelligence services for
Cybereason, an endpoint protection, detection and response company based in Tel Aviv, Israel.
"There isn't going to be any bolt-out-of-the-blue attack," he told TechNewsWorld.
"The Russians aren't scheming to disrupt the power grid tomorrow," he continued, "but if tensions boil over, if there's a direct conflict between us and them, this is absolutely a tool that Russia knows how to use and has demonstrated its willingness to use it in hybrid warfare in the Ukraine."
Mutually Assured Destruction
It's unusual for the DHS to call out a nation-state attacker by name, said Mocana's Miller, who previously worked at DHS as chief of process management, measurement and exercise planning.
That suggests it had a high degree of certainty before fingering Russia.
DHS has not commented publicly on The Wall Street Journal's report.
"Based on the level of detail presented in the Mueller indictments of July 13, I would be hard-pressed to doubt the intelligence and law enforcement communities," Michael Magrath, director of global regulations and standards at
OneSpan, told TechNewsWorld.
OneSpan, a provider of security, authentication, fraud prevention and e-signature services, is based in Chicago.
Although the U.S. doesn't brag about it, there is a widespread assumption that it has hacked the critical infrastructure of nations that launched cyberattacks on America's infrastructure. Some believe this sets up a mutual-destruction stalemate reminiscent of the Cold War. That may not be the case, however.
"It's dangerous to assume that this fits the Cold War model of a balanced standoff because of 'mutually assured destruction,'" said Ray DeMeo, COO of Virsec , a San Jose, California-based provider of protection against memory-based cyberattacks.
"Many of these hacking groups have some nation-state sponsorship, but also pursue their own agendas," he told TechNewsWorld. "This is a very distributed threat, and relying on centralized control to keep things in check probably won't work."
What's more, neither side is concerned about the mutual destruction they will wreak on each other, maintained Chris Stoneff, vice president of security solutions at Bomgar , a secure remote support and privileged access management company, based in Johns Creek, Georgia.
"Both sides feel they could withstand some kind of power disruption, at least long enough to launch other cyberattacks or create a military response if they so desire," he told TechNewsWorld.
What Can Utilities Do?
Utilities can be more aggressive in assessing vulnerabilities, updating systems, and adding new security strategies, Virsec's DeMeo said.
"They need to assume that hackers already have a footprint somewhere within their networks and bypassed their legacy perimeter defenses," he explained. "The focus needs to shift from guarding the gate to proactively protecting critical applications and making sure they only do the right thing."
Critical national infrastructure should not be directly available to the Internet, Bomgar's Stoneff recommended.
A combination of rotating passwords and multifactor authentication also could help reduce the risks that these systems could be penetrated, he said.
"It may seem obvious, but greater diligence in educating staff and the public broadly about being vigilant regarding email, social media and the websites they visit and links they click has never been more important," said Sigfus Magnusson, vice president for product management at Men & Mice , a Kopavogur, Iceland-based maker of DNS, DHCP and IP Address management software.
That is particularly true "for critical system administrators or those who may control automated systems," he told TechNewsWorld.
Still, it remains to be seen if the tough decisions needed to secure U.S. infrastructure will be made.
"It's hard to imagine that we will be able to summon the courage to harden our critical infrastructure to anything like what it would take to stop the threat," said Jeff Williams, CTO of Contrast Security , a maker of self-protecting software solutions, based in Los Altos, California.
"We built our defenses for lone script-kiddies looking to have some fun," he told TechNewsWorld, "and we're being targeted by highly trained state-sponsored attack forces."

A team of computer scientists from the University of Bonn (Germany) has developed a program that can “see the future”. The software is able to accurately predict the sequence of actions that a person carrying out a given task will perform. In tests, they have trained the program with culinary tasks and the system has been able to predict with the chef’s following actions with acceptable accuracy.
The objective of this project was to try to accurately anticipate the sequence of actions that will be carried out in the next five minutes to perform a certain task. The computer scientists considered that the kitchen tasks were perfect to make the tests, and prepared their program so that it could learn to anticipate the actions.
In order to make accurate predictions, first, it is necessary to train the software. For this, the team used 40 videos of salads preparation. All of them lasted approximately 6 minutes and contained an average of 20 different actions.
With this training, the algorithm learned what are the usual actions that are carried out to prepare a salad, as well as the duration of each of them. Later they continued adding videos so that the system learned to anticipate the actions. “We want to predict the time and duration of the activities minutes and even hours before they happen,” says Jurgen Gall, the director of the research.

Anybody who’s ever shared an Uber with a drunken stranger knows that it can be a loud, tiresome, and
downright gross experience. Right now, there isn’t much that drivers (and carpoolers) can do to steer clear of these sorts of people, but artificial intelligence could be a solution.

According to a patent application
spotted by CNN, Uber has drawn up a plan for AI that detects a user’s drunken behavior to accommodate them before they get into the backseat. The system, described by members of Uber’s Trust & Safety team in 2016 and published yesterday, tracks how someone typically uses Uber’s app: how quickly they type (and with how many typos), how precisely they click on buttons, their walking speed, and the way their phone is typically held or dropped on any given day.
Someone who hails a car to get home after hitting the bars probably won’t be the best at typing out their home address or walking too quickly (if at all). Factors like these are plugged into Uber’s planned algorithm, along with details about when and where the ride was requested. A late-night Uber call or one that’s from an area loaded with bars, would tip the system off about a rider’s sobriety differently than a daytime call from the suburbs.
How drunken or disorderly the AI assumes a rider to be is ultimately what shapes what their ride looks like, according to the patent application. A driver set to pick up a particularly tipsy passenger might get a notification on their phone beforehand, or they could be told to meet the rider at the designated location a bit later to give the person more time to get to the car before driving off. Depending on their sobriety levels (or lack thereof), a passenger may only match with drivers who are trained or experienced with handling people in this state, or the rider might be prevented from joining a carpool.
Uber’s idea, as it’s written out, manages to make some late-night rides a bit less awkward without barring drunken passengers from the service entirely. Still, it’s not hard to imagine that a driver with a new, shiny, upholstered car might think twice about picking up a passenger they know to be sloshed. If these people can’t get themselves into the back of an Uber, then they might resort to driving or other forms of transportation that can be dangerous under alcohol’s influence.
Another disturbing possibility comes from the drivers who wouldn’t use this indicator as a deterrent but as a draw. There have been more than 100 cases of assault and abuse at the hands of Uber drivers over the past four years. A common thread through many cases, according to court documents obtained by CNN, was that the victims were either heavily inebriated — if not fully passed out — while the assault took place. Uber’s planned AI feature could, in theory, let drivers easily scout neighborhoods to find drunken passengers for this purpose.
Uber declined to comment on these issues, but it’s important to note that this product nascent; it’s just a patent application right now. The issues described here could be dealt with in a more considered way before this project pops into everyone’s phones, if it ever does. Until then, the countless carpoolers who take Uber might have to tolerate drunken, impromptu karaoke in the back seat of their car — and maybe even getting puked on.
